Different Ways of Using Air Fresheners

Air fresheners are designed to release fragrance and are generally used in households or commercial spaces such as restrooms. These products fall in two broad groups: the continuous action and the instant action. In the following paragraphs you can learn about the different ways of using air fresheners.

The products that would be classified as continuous action include:
• Wall plug-ins that would use Piezoelectricity systems to aerosolize odor and the heat to vaporize it
• Scented candles and items which uses a candle flame or any other heat source to vaporize fragrance
• Diffusers in wick and reed forms that would give off aroma by evaporation from wicks soaked in fragrance or wooden reeds
• Incense burners
• Fragrance filled gels which discharge aroma as the gel is dispersed at times with an electric fan
• Fragrance saturated materials such as floor wax, plastics, paper or wood that would give off aroma by off-gassing
• Nebulization products, which transform liquid fragrances to a vapor during a cold process without having to use heat.

The instant action products are generally atomizers or aerosol sprays.

The aerosol spray works with a propellant and odor packaged which is pressurized in a sealed glass or metal container. This container will have a valve that will open after the spray nozzlze inside the actuator is pressed downwards. Once the valve opens the fragrance will be forced throughout the spray nozzle to create air droplets in the atmosphere.

An atomizer is a metal, plastic or glass container with fragrance. This will operate in a similar way, with the exception that the actuator is a pump. When this pump is pressed it will create pressure to release fragrance mist from the container via a tube and spray nozzle.

In recent times, aerosol packages a plastic bag filled with fragrance in a can. This bag will be affixed to the valve, spray nozzle or actuator and enclosed in the can encompassed by pressurized air. Once the actuator is pushed down, the valve will open to force the liquid through the nozzle.

Basically, air fresheners will add fragrance to the surroundings of interior spaces as tiny droplets which converts to vapor or as molecules from fragrance constituents evaporating from a particular source. In most cases, fragrance will disperse in the atmosphere to mask or add a specific odor.

There are different methods used to control odors:

Receptor Blockers: All of these are specifically formulated substances normally found in waxes and cleaning products which prevent humans from detecting specific scents.

Adsorption: There are adsorbents such as zeolite, initialized charcoal or even silica gel which might be used to get rid of odors.

Oxidation: These are ozone, cholorine, hydrogen peroxide, chlorate, peroxide and other agents used to oxidize and eliminate organic-sourced odors from surfaces.

Air sanitizer: This can be used to remove odors from air-borne bacterial activity.

Masking: This can be done to overwhelm one odor with another using any of the methods described above.
